About Simedix Tech

SiMedix has designed and manufactured OpSim, a virtual reality-based educational simulator for phacoemulsification cataract surgery that has simplified complex procedures in the real world. Using VR simulation technology solutions such as the innovative physics engine and IMU/Vision integrated positioning system, the company has solved the current problem by providing young residents with a life-like environment for optimum learning, leading to reduced errors during actual surgery. Regardless of training, the company’s product has been used as a warm-up before cataract surgery, improving technical, cognitive, and psychomotor performance. The patient’s information can be loaded into OpSim, resulting in a more customized warm-up and a successful operation.

Vision

To be a leading provider of state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) based phacoemulsification cataract surgery simulators for medical training and education, thus improving eye medical care.

Mission

To contribute and fulfill the demanding worldwide needs of cataract surgery learning and training by offering life-like environments by developing a new VR-based simulator, thus transforming the traditional medical training system.

Problems To Solve

Cataract

The eye’s lens gradually becomes hard and cloudy, allowing less light to pass through, making it more difficult to see. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness (51%).

Cataract Surgery

In the traditional method of cataract surgery, practical training cannot be customized according to the patient’s needs. Even doctors cannot have the warm-up session before the surgery.

Phacoemulsification

Although it is easy to learn phacoemulsification, mastering it is quite challenging. Any mistake made while performing cataract surgery procedures may lead to serious problems for the patient

Prevalence in Canada

Limitations of traditional training on animals and human cadavers: Pre-training in eye surgery is necessary. Medical students practice in the wet lab with enucleated animal eyes.

Our Solution

The company’s VR-based simulator, OpSim, has significantly advanced medical training by providing residents and healthcare professionals with immersive, hands-on experiences in a controlled, virtual environment. It has been proven to enhance technical, cognitive, and psychomotor skills by allowing users to perform complex medical procedures and handle equipment as part of structured training scenarios. OpSim is particularly valuable as a warm-up tool before cataract surgeries, where it helps improve operational accuracy, reduce errors, and decrease post-operative complications.

The simulator’s ability to load patient-specific data allows for more personalized, realistic training sessions. By minimizing the need for wet labs, OpSim offers residents the opportunity to simulate a wide range of difficult, dangerous, or costly scenarios that are otherwise hard to replicate in real life. Additionally, OpSim’s detailed 3D medical models, which are far more intricate than traditional physical models, provide learners with deeper insights into anatomy and surgical techniques. The system’s built-in analytical module tracks actions and provides continuous performance feedback, allowing users to assess their progress, refine their skills, and achieve mastery over critical ophthalmic procedures like phacoemulsification.

As a result, OpSim has been instrumental in boosting residents’ confidence and competence, leading to better patient outcomes and reduced surgical risks in real-life practice.

Our Product

OpSim Eye Cataract Surgery Simulator

OpSim, an advanced ophthalmic surgical simulator, has been designed to help medical residents practice in a realistic, repeatable environment, either independently or under mentor supervision, while keeping patients out of the operating room. It provides a measurable intraocular surgical experience that is difficult to replicate in traditional wet labs. Using specialized tools like cataract surgery handpieces and instruments, residents have learned to manipulate tools with precision, improving skills such as phacoemulsification, forceps handling, and complex techniques like advanced capsulorhexis. The simulator offers instant feedback after each training module and generates detailed reports, enabling residents to track their progress and develop essential skills, from basic procedures to advanced surgical methods.
